According to T. S. Eliot in the opening lines of his epic poem “The Wasteland:”
April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
People do seem to get this line wrong, substituting March usually. I’m not sure what Eliot meant by it, but what’s cruel for me is that one is anticipating the fullness of spring and the warmth of sunshine so longingly in April, that to have to endure a month of mostly rain and gray skies (which is what April is like where I live) can be very cruel indeed.
So, to cheer myself up, I wanted to wish a Happy Birthday to a few women I admire who share my birthday month. It is entirely a coincidence that they are all actresses and all Brits and that they have all appeared in at least one Harry Potter film.
Emma Thompson turns 50 this April 15th. Emma Watson, who plays my favorite alter-ego, Hermoine Granger, turns 19. Julie Christie is the kind of woman I want to be when I grow up.
Happy Birthday, Ladies. Happy Birthday, Sira. Happy Birthday, Holly. Happy Birthday, Wayne. Happy Birthday, Betsy. Happy Birthday, Nancy. And Happy Birthday to any friends whom I have inadvertently left out. This past year has had its share of cruelty for me personally. But the bottom line is not cruel in any way, which is that I’m still alive, and I’m very glad to be here.
